Reclaiming Memory: The Holocaust Memorial Site
For decades, the site where over 3,000 Jewish souls from Vilkaviškis were brutally murdered in September 1941 lay quiet, lacking the prominent, respectful recognition it deserved. This project was about changing that permanently—ensuring that anyone who visits this sacred ground understands exactly what happened here and who is remembered.
Building Local Alliances
Transforming the memorial site required deep cooperation. Change doesn't happen from afar; it happens on the ground.
Working closely with the Vilkaviškis municipality and local leaders, we sat around the table to design a dignified space that would honor the victims and educate future generations.
A Global Effort: Crowdfunding the Vision
This monument was not built by a massive government grant—it was built by the hearts of people worldwide. Through a dedicated crowdfunding campaign, descendants, historians, and supporters from all corners of the globe contributed the funds needed to turn our architectural and historical plans into physical reality. It proved that the memory of Vilkaviškis belongs to the whole world.

The Holocaust Sign: A prominent, clear memorial marker that permanently names and honors the thousands of Jewish men, women, and children whose lives were tragically cut short on this ground.

Honoring the Righteous Gentiles: In the darkest of times, there were glimmers of immense bravery. This dedicated sign honors the courageous local Lithuanian citizens who risked their own lives to hide and save their Jewish neighbors.

The Memorial Grove 2017 -2024
In 2017 with the support of many of you we planted a grove of 67 lime trees to remember the people of Villkaviskis who helped their Jewish neighbours in their darkest days.
Now 7 years later my friend Kristina writes
"Today, arborist students and I trimmed lime trees, which were planted at the initiative of Ralph Salinger for people from Vilkaviški who saved and hid Jews during the war. The trees have grown nicely, and sThe Memorial Grove 2017 -2024oon there will be a great park here. "
