After the massacre of the men in July, the women and children of Vilkaviškis were left in a state of agonizing uncertainty. Forced into the military barracks in early August, they became the sole pillars of their families. They were told they were in a "free Ghetto," a cruel lie designed to keep them calm while they worked in the surrounding fields and gardens.

The women were forced to maintain a facade of "normalcy" for their children. Sheina recalls the immense bravery of mothers who, despite knowing the men had vanished, continued to share what little food they had and attempted to keep a sense of dignity within the crowded barracks.

 

The Final Act: The end came on September 24, 1941, during the Jewish fast of Tsom Gedaliah. The remaining women and children were led to the same pits where the men had fallen. In the space of three months, a community that had thrived for centuries was silenced.
